We started by working out what she wanted to say. The mental barriers she had erected made this a challenge. By making the process like the pitching that she was so successful at, we helped her build a great story with engaging anecdotes and a structure that got her messages across. We were even able to get her in front of a camera to rehearse, so we could build her confidence.
But would we ever persuade her to have more than two or three people in the room listening to her? We knew we had won when, on the third day, she said: “right, I’m getting my staff in here right now to hear me”. We started by working with their top product team. Starting with first principles - we made them rethink what they were trying to achieve, what messages they wanted to get across and how their audiences react. When this leading law firm had to re-pitch to their largest long term customer, alarm bells rightly began to ring. Initially, they wanted a “bit of help with the presentation rehearsal”. One quick look at their presentation materials told us that this would not be enough.Starting by mapping the client, we identified who they knew, who they didn’t know and with whom they had to build relationships. We looked at the challenges their client was going to face over the next two years and how they work with their lawyers. We mapped the competition and identified where we could offer a truly unbeatable service. Finally we put together an engaging and compelling pitch with extensive individual coaching.

“I hate presenting”
It’s true, you can rise to the top of a FTSE company without ever making a presentation. Our client, lets call him James, was appointed CEO of this FTSE 250 company. He had got by without ever having made a formal presentation.But he had a problem. Or, as he said to us, “I now have three problems: staff, shareholders and analysts – all of whom expect me to present.” For James, we had to start at the beginning: Build his confidence; help him overcome some long held prejudices; and equip him with tools so that he could go out and present with ease. We did this through a series of short workshops that fitted in with his busy timetable.
By concentrating on one upcoming event – the Christmas party, where he was going to stand up in front of all his staff – we showed him how to do it. Step one for the Christmas festivities was to tear up his 50 page PowerPoint presentation. We equipped James with some easy-to-use structures for his talks. He learned a time efficient system to prepare for presentations so that he was completely comfortable with his new-found skills. When this Danish acquisition team wanted to meet leading investors, they came to us for help. The team planned to raise over €1bn to buy one of Eastern Europe’s largest energy businesses. The acquisition team was made up of industry experts, but with little experience of raising finance.We started by working out the investment story, and what would resonate with investors. As we often do, we tore up their PowerPoint and insisted they focused on getting across their big ideas in an engaging and convincing way. This meant we did not allow them into any meetings without proper rehearsals.
